North Carolina does not have restrictions to work as a doula. The state does not require a certification or a bachelor’s degree. Becoming certified has advantages for your career, but it is strictly voluntary to do so in this state.

Course and Workshop Details
This is a 2 day birth doula training workshop that is required for DONA certification. There is also a Childbirth for Doulas class that accompanies the workshop which is also required for DONA certification. This set of courses are offered on the following dates
- Childbirth for doulas class is offered on March 24, 2017
- Training workshop is offered from March 25-26, 2017

As part of your doula training, these courses will cover the following:
Discuss the anatomy and physiology of reproduction, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Define common medical terms used during labor. Discuss procedures and tests during a normal birth along with their risks. Learn about pain management in the form of narcotics and epidurals with their risks and side effects. Learn about comfort measures given during labor, such as relaxation and breathing techniques. Understand the cesarean procedure. Identify normal newborn characteristics Discuss the benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and newborn - Prerequisites
- It is strongly recommended to attend a 1 day Introduction to Childbirth class or a 12 hour childbirth class series taught by a DONA certified instructor. It is required to read “The Birth Partner” by Penny Simkin before attending the workshop.
