Doula Training in Illinois

In Illinois, there is no requirement or restriction for a doula to have a certification in order to practice. However, many doulas become certified in order to become more competitive in the job market. Additionally, Illinois does not require a high school, college, or equivalent degree in order to work in the state.

The following is a list of educational classes and resources available in the Illinois area which can be used for your doula training.  Please read the details carefully to determine if the classes are affiliated or required for a particular certification granting organization. You do not have to be pursuing a certification in order to attend these classes, however, you do need to be at least 18 years or older in order to participate.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

The training will consist of a 2 day birth doula training workshop and an Introduction to Childbirthing for Doulas course.  Both the workshop and the intro course is required for DONA certification.  They will be offered from Sept 29 – Oct 1, 2017

  • 2 day, 20 hour birth doula training workshop (required credit for CAPPA certification)

Course and Workshop Topics
These classes will cover the following topics as a part of your doula training:

  • Understand how to provide evidence-base care to the expectant mother
  • Use roleplaying and hands-on interactive training to help you learn
  • Recognize the range and scope of a doula’s job
  • Learn how provide prenatal and postpartum consultations
  • Identify skills to initate breastfeeding
  • Understand how to establish and grow your doula business
  • Discuss the ethics and requirements of the certification process

Prerequisuites

Prior to receiving training, students are required to email the Pre-Workshop Study Guide to the instructor.  The Study Guide is to make sure that you are up to date in commonly used medical terminology.
