Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This is a 2 day postpartum doula training workshop which will count as 20 credit hours.  This workshop satisfies the workshop requirement of a ProDoula certification which combines certification for a  postpartum doula and infant care doula. You do not have to be enrolled in the ProDoula program in order to attend the class. There will be a pre-test to gauge your knowledge before you start the workshop.  The workshop is offered on July 15-16, 2017.

The cost for the postpartum doula workshop is $595  There is a ProDoula membership fee of $75 for the first year and $50 for subsequent years.

Attendance for this 3 day workshop will meet the requirements for a DONA-approved postpartum doula workshop.  You must attend all 3 days to receive credit for the DONA certification.

Prerequisites

Before going to the workshop, you are required to read at least one book from each of these categories from the DONA reading list:  Becoming a Mother, The Newborn, and Breastfeeding.  This is to help you familiarize yourself with the concepts and terminology that will be used during the workshop.

Course and Workshop Topics
As part of your postpartum doula training, these classes will teach you the following concepts:

  • Discuss the essential duties of a postpartum doula in providing physical and emotional support during the first three months after childbirth
  • Learn to recognize the signs of changes in the mother after giving birth, including physical changes and mood changes
  • Discuss how to provide evidence-based education to the entire family and when to refer to the appropriate resources
  • Understand how address special needs of the infant and the family 
  • Learn how to teach the mother to take care of her infant with bathing, diapering, and breastfeeding techniques
  • Receive training in how to incorporate older siblings and the father into the new family dynamics
  • Understand how to approach your job as a business and learn how to market yourself to new clients
  • Discuss the ethics, the standards of practice, and the certification process from DONA

The cost for the 3 day DONA-approved postpartum doula workshop is $475.  If you register early, there is a $50 discount.
