It is not required by the state of Rhode Island to get a certification in order to practice as a postpartum doula.  If you decide to enroll and get a certification, it is not mandatory in the state.  However, many women do end up being certified in order to advance their career goals.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This is a 2 day postpartum doula training workshop which will count as 20 credit hours.  This workshop satisfies the workshop requirement of a ProDoula certification as a postpartum and infant care doula (ICD). You do not have to be enrolled in the ProDoula program in order to attend the class. There will be a pre-test to gauge your knowledge before you start the workshop.  The workshop is offered on March 11-12, 2017.

Costs and Fees

The cost for the postpartum doula workshop is $595  There is a ProDoula membership fee of $75 for the first year and $50 for subsequent years.

The classes taught are Caring for Your Amazing Newborn class (2 hours), Breastfeeding Success class (2 hours), and Accident Prevention and CPR class (1.5 hours).  These classes are not required part of a certification organization such as DONA or Birth Arts.

These classes will teach you the following concepts about providing postpartum support to the new mother and baby:

  • Learn tips to encourage successful breastfeeding including techniques and proper milk handling and storage
  • Discuss common newborn accidents and learn how to prevent them through babyproofing a home
  • Understand infant CPR and tips to how to handle choking and other hazards
