Postpartum Doula Training in Virginia


Virginia's regulations state that postpartum doula are allowed to practice withouhg having a certification. Even though there is not state requirement, many doulas become certified to receive up-to-date training Also, there is no requirement to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to work.

The following is a list of educational classes and resources in the Virginia area which may be used as your postpartum doula training.  Classes which can be used for the certification process will be listed in the details.  You do not have to be pursuing a certification in order to attend, however, you must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This is a 3 day training workshop (27 hours total) as a step to becoming a postpartum doula. This workshop satisfies the workshop portion of a DONA postpartum doula certification. You can attend and receive training even if you are not enrolled with DONA.  The workshop is offered on May 11-13, 2017.


Costs and Fees

The cost for the postpartum doula workshop is $465.  If you register early, the price is $425.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

Newborn Care Basics class - 2 hour class
Breastfeeding Basics class - 2 hour class
Working Mom class - 2 hour class

These essential classes can be used for training, but are not required for DONA or CAPPA certification.


Course and Workshop Topics

These classes will train you in the following topics as part of your postpartum doula training:
  • Discuss the physiological effects of breastfeeding on the baby and the mother
  • Learn proper breastfeeding positioning and baby latching techniques
  • Discuss how to pump and storage milk as the mother prepares to return to work
  • Understand the importance of attachment of the baby to the mother
  • Learn newborn sleeping and eating patterns
  • Demonstrate how to calm a fussy baby
  • Learn how to give baths, change diapers, and when to call the doctor during infant distress

Costs and Fees

The Newborn Care Basics class, Breastfeeding Basics class, and Working Mom class are all free to attend.
