Postpartum Doula Training in New Jersey

New Jersey gives postpartum doulas the option to work with or without a certification.  In other words, there is no requirement to pass a certification program in order to work in the state.  Additionally, there is no requirement to have graduated high school or college in order to work in New Jersey.

The following is a list of educational courses or workshops in the New Jersey area which may be used as your postpartum doula training.  You do not have to be taking  a certification curriculum in order to take the classes, however, you are required to be 18 years or older.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This a 2 day postpartum doula training workshop that is required for a CPD (Certified Postpartum Doula) through CAPPA.  You will receive 18 hours credit for this workshop.  You do not have to be affiliated or enrolled with CAPPA to attend. The workshop is offered on April 1-2, 2017 from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM daily.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

The classes offered are Infant Care and Safety classes, Breastfeeding class, and Happiest Baby on the Block class.  Although these courses can be part of your education, they are not affiliated with certification organizations such as DONA.

Course and Workshop Topics

As part of your postpartum doula training, these classes will cover the following topics:
  • Discuss how to proper bathing, diapering, holding, soothing, and swaddling techniques
  • Learn how to babyproof your home including crib, car seat, and toy safety
  • Understand normal infant growth and development and when to call a pediatrician
  • Discuss infant issues such as temperature taking, umbilical cord care, and circumcision care
  • Learn the advantages and benefits of a happy breastfeeding relationship between mother and baby
  • Learn about proper breastfeeding positions, latch-on techniques, and newborn feeding cues
  • Discuss breastfeeding discomforts, management, and lactation recourses
  • Learn what to do in order to encourage the baby to sleep for longer periods
