Postpartum Doula Training in Minnesota


In Minnesota, there is no requirement by law for postpartum doulas to get a certification in order to practice in the state.  However, some jobs require you to be certified in order to apply.  Additional, there is no state requirement to hold a degree from a university in order to work.

The following is a list of educational classes and resources in the Minnesota area which may be used as your postpartum doula training.  Classes taken as part of a certification curriculum will be noted in the details section.  You are required to be at least 18 years of age in order to attend.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This is a 4 day postpartum doula training workshop lasting 32 hours total.  This workshop satisfies the workshop portion of a DONA certification as a postpartum doula.  You can attend and receive training even if you are not enrolled with DONA or have yet to complete a breastfeeding class.

The workshop is offered on April 21-24, 2017 from 8:00AM - 5:00PM everyday.

The cost for the postpartum doula workshop is $500 for early registration and $550 for late registration.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This is a 4 day workshop that fulfills the requirement for DONA postpartum doula certification.


Prerequisites

Before attending the workshop, you must read The Postpartum Doula's Role in Maternity Care and The Birth Doula's Contribution to Modern Maternity Care.  These are the two position papers from DONA.  In addition, you must also read at least one book from each of these categories from the DONA required reading list:
  • Becoming a Mother
  • The Newborn
  • Breastfeeding

Course and Workshop Topics

As part of your postpartum doula training, these classes will cover the following:
  • Discuss the how postpartum doulas provide support for the new mother
  • Learn about lactation support and education
  • Discuss newborn care topics such as swaddling and clothing
  • Understand the physical and emotional changes to the mother during the perinatal period
  • Learn effective listening skills to better serve your clients
  • Identify different postpartum disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Develop and maintain your business through marketing and basic accounting
  • Discuss the standards of practice and the certification requirements for DONA

Costs and Fees

The 3 day DONA International-approved workshop costs $500.  If you register early, the cost is only $450.
