How to Become a Certified CAPPA Doula


To be certified as a doula for Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association, you must be registered as a member, take courses (either online or in-person), support 3 mothers in their births, read doula literature, complete writing assignments, and take an exam.

According to CAPPA, there is a mandatory workshop with CAPPA-approved instructors as part of the training program.  The courses are taught either in-person or online.  The estimated time to complete the doula training requirements is 2 years.



CAPPA Doula Certification Requirements:  

  • Be registered as a CAPPA member
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Enroll in classes, either traditional or online distance learning
  • Read course manuals
  • Read 5 books from the required reading list 
  • Watch required doula DVD
  • Complete a baby training course
  • Support 3 mothers by attending 3 births and receive evaluations on your performance
  • Research and compile a list of resources available in your area for expectant mothers
  • Pass a multiple choice exam


CAPPA Doula Certification Costs and Fees:  

  • Training Program Cost: $350 and up depending on which classes you pick
  • Traditional Class Cost: $175
  • Online Distance Learning Classes Cost :$600
  • Hug Your Baby Program: $35
  • Membership Fee: $55 (1 year), $100 (2 years), $135 (3 years), $200 (5 years)
  • Recertification Fee:  $75
