Doula Training in Rhode Island


In Rhode Island, doulas have the option of working a without a certification.  There is no state requirement for you to become certified, but certification is required to qualify for some jobs.  Additionally, Rhode Island does not require doulas to have a high school or college degree in order to work or train for a certification.

Course and Workshop Details and Requirements

This 3 day training workshop includes the Introduction to Childbirth for Doulas course (7 hours) as well as the Birth Doula Training Workshop (16 hours).  Both are required as part of the DONA certification process.  There is also an OPTIONAL Breastfeeding for Doulas course, which is also a part of the DONA certification process.

The workshop and introduction course is offered on May 5-7, 2017.  The optional breastfeeding course is offered on May 5, 2017.

  • Learn comfort, relaxation, and breathing techniques
  • Discuss medical options available for labor and birth, including c-section and epidurals, so that the mother can make informed decisions.  
  • Gain knowledge of basic infant care during the immediate postpartum period such as feeding, diapering, and bathing
  • Discuss options such as cloth diapers and environmentally friendly newborn care products
  • Identify common breastfeeding issues and misconceptions to ensure proper milk production
